Dorm Living – 5 Reasons You Should Live in a Dorm Your Freshman Year of College
Living in a residential hall your freshman year of college should actually be a no-brainer. There’s no better place to fully immerse yourself in the college experience than to live in a dorm full of your peers going through the same situation. Here’s why this is a “must do” and not to be missed.
Reason #1 – There’s no faster way to meet new people, make new friends and get connected than living in a dorm. You’ll be surrounded by your peers who are all going through the same challenges and new experiences that you are. If you want to live in a real community and really have a sense of belonging then dorm living is it.
Reason #2 – Amenities. Many residential halls offer useful features such as cable, Internet, air conditioning/heating, libraries, study rooms, free tutoring, laundry facilities and cafeterias.
Reason #3 – Almost all dorms have a “resident assistant” or RA who is an undergraduate paid peer leader. Their primary job is to be a role model and assist residents in their academic and personal progress and success. They are available to students for advice on academic resources and support services on campus, conflict mediation/resolution, tutoring and many other aspects of college life.
Reason #4 – There’s nothing like living on campus, being in the middle of everything and not having to mess with transportation issues. You’re within walking distance of classes, libraries, dining halls, gyms, counseling offices and university sporting facilities.
Reason #5 – Most residential halls have floor activities on the weekends and some on weeknights. These are great opportunities to build friendships, community and explore differences in your fellow residents cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Hopefully these tips can help you have the best experience when you move into the dorms, remember to be social and make friends!
